Two exciting emerging artists showing their latest series of fresh visions for the Budapest audience under the umbrella of Heart & Cherry.
The precise template motifs and monochrome colour palette of István Dukai’s work, prepared using digital techniques, draw attention to texture, material elements and form. These works are entirely objective, non-referential works that are linked to the creative conception of American minimal art, the motifs of repetitive melodies in electronic music and the aestheticism of brutalist architecture. Composed of concentric bands and stripes, painted on raw canvas with black acrylic paint, the works are at once stark, deadpan, austere, imposing, velvety, diagrammatic, yet tactile and sensual. Dukai mostly favours raw, unadorned materials in the creative process, emphasising the traditional ideals of craft and art. His works are largely hand-woven, made from recycled, not uncommonly decades-old burlap, which he dyes with natural tanning materials. His work is a fascinating dichotomy of natural and artificial, analogue and digital, traditional and technocratic.
Bence Magyarlaki’s works deal with issues of intimacy, social relations and body image and different body concepts. His sculptures are dynamic representations of a body bending in on itself or intertwined with another, exploring social patterns of belonging. Through this series, the artist seeks to express the psychological and social aspects of body image, self-esteem and identity formation. The anthropomorphism of his works invites us to a fluid, emotional and relational reinterpretation of the body.
